New Hope

New Hope, PA

History

A riverside town on the Delaware with galleries, stone buildings and a canal towpath for easy walks. Weekdays are calmer, and the bridge to Lambertville, New Jersey, makes a short stroll.

New Hope lies on the west bank of the Delaware River, about 30 miles (50 km) north of Philadelphia. The town was formerly called Coryell's Ferry. After Benjamin Parry's mill burned down in 1790, he rebuilt it and named it New Hope Mills, which gave the town its name. Later the New Hope art colony formed here around Edward Willis Redfield and William Langson Lathrop. The Bucks County Playhouse opened in 1939 on the site of the old mill and calls itself "America's Most Famous Summer Theater."

You can stroll through the old town, walk the towpath along the Delaware Canal and cross the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge into New Jersey on foot. Allow two to three hours. The New Hope and Ivyland Railroad offers excursion rides. Weekdays are quieter.
