Grounds For Sculpture
Hamilton, NJ
A landscaped sculpture park and museum where large contemporary works stand among gardens, ponds and trees. Allow two to three hours for a relaxed walk, and check the opening days before driving out.
Grounds For Sculpture was created on the site of the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds. The sculptor and philanthropist Seward Johnson wanted to create a public sculpture garden where people could get to know contemporary art in an informal setting. Construction began in 1989, and the park opened in 1992. Today it displays nearly 300 works, including pieces by Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith and George Segal, as well as commissions such as Magdalena Abakanowicz's "Space of Stone."
Allow two to three hours for a relaxed walk through the gardens, ponds and groves of trees. Check the opening days in advance, as the park is not open every day. Hamilton lies near Trenton and makes a good stop between New York and Philadelphia.
