Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo

Ivanovo, Bulgaria

History

Medieval chapels cut into the cliffs above the Rusenski Lom river, decorated with frescoes and listed as World Heritage. A short path leads along the rock face; visits are best on dry days.

The Ivanovo Rock-Hewn Churches lie about 20 km south of Ruse, some 32 m above the Rusenski Lom river. Monks lived in the caves from the 1220s until the 17th century; at its peak there were about 40 churches and 300 other structures. Rulers of the Second Bulgarian Empire such as Ivan Alexander and Ivan Asen II donated funds, as donor portraits show. In the 14th century the monastery was a centre of Hesychasm.

The frescoes of the 13th and 14th centuries, preserved in five churches, are famous; the 14th-century paintings in the main church are regarded as typical of Palaeologan art. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. About an hour is enough for a visit. The paths run along the rock face; take care when it is wet, so dry days are best. In high season it can get busier around midday.
