Palace of the Parliament

Bucharest, Romania

History

One of the largest administrative buildings in the world, dominating Bucharest's centre with marble halls and huge chandeliers. Visits are by guided tour only, so bring ID and book ahead.

The Palace of the Parliament stands on Spirii Hill (Dealul Spirii) at the western end of Bulevardul Unirii. It was built between 1984 and 1997 on the orders of Nicolae Ceaușescu; for this, about 7 square kilometres of the old town were demolished and around 40,000 residents resettled. The building is 84 metres high, has a floor area of 365,000 square metres and about 1,100 rooms on 12 floors. It is among the heaviest buildings in the world and is regarded as the world's second-largest administrative building.

Today the Romanian parliament meets here, and the building also houses three museums, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art. The palace can only be visited on a guided tour; bring photo ID and book in advance.
