Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum

Bucharest, Romania

History

An open-air museum on the shore of Herăstrău Park with farmsteads, wooden churches and windmills brought from villages across Romania. Allow a couple of hours and comfortable shoes for the paths.

The “Dimitrie Gusti” Village Museum was founded in 1936 and lies in Herăstrău Park in Bucharest. The sociologist and former education minister Dimitrie Gusti (1880–1955) wanted to document the life of peasant communities. On 14 hectares stand some 360 structures; the collection comprises about 60,000 objects and 250,000 documents on Romanian rural life.

Among other things you will see farmsteads, windmills, an oil press from 1794, pottery from Horezu, mining equipment from the Carpathians and a 19th-century cooper's workshop. Theatre and folk dance performances are occasionally held. As a rule of thumb, allow a few hours and wear comfortable shoes for the paths. The address is Șoseaua Kiseleff 28–30.
