Route description
Leave Carcassonne south-east into the Corbières, a dry country of garrigue and vineyards, to Lagrasse, with its abbey, medieval market hall and stone bridge. Minor roads cross the hills south to Duilhac and the steep path up to Peyrepertuse.
Quéribus is just a few kilometres east, above the village of Cucugnan, and on a clear day the view reaches the sea. Drop to Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet and drive into the Gorges de Galamus, a single-lane shelf cut into the cliff, then return to the valley.
The D117 then heads west along the Fenouillèdes to Puilaurens, rising out of a fir forest. Continue through Quillan and Puivert to Montségur, the peak where the Cathars made their last stand in 1244.
All the castles involve a climb of 15 to 30 minutes on rough paths, and some close in high wind. Avoid the midday heat in summer; spring and autumn are ideal, and local wine cooperatives are on every road.
