Route description
Take the A68 from Toulouse to Albi, about an hour. The brick cathedral of Sainte-Cécile and the bishops’ palace, now the Toulouse-Lautrec museum, form a UNESCO-listed centre on the banks of the Tarn. Park near the river and walk over the Old Bridge for the classic view. Gaillac, on the way, is the main town of the local wine area.
Head north on the D600 to Cordes-sur-Ciel, a fortified hill town founded in 1222. The main street climbs steeply between Gothic merchants’ houses; park at the bottom and walk or take the shuttle. Continue through the Aveyron gorges to Najac, a village strung along a ridge with a royal castle at the end, and follow the river to Villefranche-de-Rouergue.
Villefranche is a bastide with an arcaded square and a large Thursday market. From there it is about an hour’s drive north-east to Conques, set on a steep hillside above the Dourdou. Its Romanesque abbey church has a carved Last Judgement over the door and windows by Pierre Soulages. Cars must stay in the car parks at the top of the village.
From Conques follow the Lot upstream through Entraygues-sur-Truyère to Estaing, where a castle rises above a Gothic bridge. The D920 along the river is narrow in places but manageable. End in Rodez, whose red sandstone cathedral and Musée Soulages are both worth a stop. The Viaduc de Millau and the Tarn gorges are about an hour further south.
