Route description
Take the D5 motorway west from Prague to Plzeň, about 95 km; Czech motorways need an electronic vignette, bought online before you drive. Plzeň is the home of Pilsner lager, and the brewery tours and the underground passages beneath the old town are the main draws besides St Bartholomew’s Cathedral, whose tower you can climb for a view over the square.
From Plzeň, main roads lead west to Mariánské Lázně, around 75 km. The spa town is laid out around a park with a cast-iron colonnade and a singing fountain that plays music several times a day in season. A short drive north brings you to Kynžvart Château, Metternich’s summer house, before you continue west to Cheb and its Romanesque castle near the German border.
From Cheb, route 6 runs east towards Karlovy Vary. Stop at Loket, a small town wrapped in a loop of the Ohře under its Gothic castle, then carry on to Karlovy Vary, about 15 km further. The spa quarter along the Teplá river is pedestrian; walk from colonnade to colonnade and taste the hot springs from a spa cup, then return to Prague on route 6, about 130 km.
This is an easy trip for motorhomes on good main roads, but the spa centres are narrow and busy, with limited parking. Use the large car parks on the edge of each town and walk in. The region is pleasant year-round; spa colonnades and cafés stay open in winter, while the castles mostly close from November to March or open only at weekends.
