Before you go
- Under the Baden-Württemberg nature conservation law, the right of access does not include camping. Forests and nature reserves are off limits for camping.
- One night at the roadside to restore fitness to drive is a legal grey area, not a right to camp. Ask the local authority if unsure.
- Pitches on private hosts' land can be booked online through the platform Nomady Camps, featured by Black Forest Tourism.
Planning
The Black Forest lies in Baden-Württemberg between the Rhine valley and the borders with France and Switzerland. It is about 160 km long, and its highest summit is the Feldberg at 1,493 m. The Black Forest National Park, established in 2014, lies between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt. Black Forest Tourism describes distinct experiences in every season, from hiking and lakes in summer to snowshoeing in the south in winter.
Camping
Wild camping is generally prohibited in Baden-Württemberg and fines are possible. Camping is not allowed in forests and nature reserves. According to a newspaper report, up to about ten hours at the roadside to restore fitness to drive count as a legal grey area. For nights in the countryside, private pitches via Nomady Camps are an option. Otherwise use campsites and motorhome stopovers and check the rules of the municipality.
Getting around
The Black Forest High Road (B 500) runs about 60 km from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt. Many Black Forest destinations take part in the KONUS guest card, which gives free bus and train travel in the region while you stay in a participating place. Ask your campsite whether it takes part. Check height, width and weight signs on minor roads and in village centres.
