Feldberg

Feldberg (Schwarzwald), Germany

Nature

The highest summit of the Black Forest, with open, grassy slopes and wide views towards the Alps on clear days. Marked trails and a cable car to the neighbouring Seebuck lead up, so bring a windproof layer even in summer.

At 1,493 m the Feldberg is the highest mountain in the Black Forest and the highest peak in Germany outside the Alps. A barrier-free summit circuit of about 5.8 km takes roughly 2.5 hours, leading from the Seebuck with the Bismarck Monument past the Feldberg Tower to the summit. The total climb is only about 80 m.

The Feldberg cable car takes you up to the Seebuck, and its cabins are step-free. The Feldberg Tower has an observation platform reached by lift. Toilets are at the multi-storey car park, in the Haus der Natur and at the cable car station. The mountain is open and exposed to the weather, so pack a windproof jacket even in summer. Allow half a day for the circuit including breaks; the long-distance views are best on clear days.
