Røros
Røros, Norway
A former copper-mining town of low wooden houses and narrow streets, with the large mining church on the hill. Winters here are very cold, so come in summer for a relaxed walk or in winter for the old-world atmosphere.
Røros lies at an altitude of 630 metres in Trøndelag. For 333 years, until 1977, copper mining shaped the town, which received “Bergstad” (mining town) status in 1646. Around 80 historic wooden houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, with dark pitch-log façades, form its core. In 1980 Røros was inscribed as “Røros Mining Town and the Circumference” on the UNESCO World Heritage List, for its authentic wooden buildings.
The town has two churches, the historic Røros Church and the more recent Røros Chapel. Røros has about 5,700 inhabitants today (as of 2025). A walk through the narrow lanes and across the old mining areas takes two to three hours. If you arrive by motorhome, find out about pitches on the edge of town beforehand. Because of the altitude, pack a warm jacket even in summer.
