Nidaros Cathedral

Trondheim, Norway

History

A large Gothic cathedral in Trondheim, with a detailed western facade and a long history as a pilgrimage destination. Walk the old town and the wooden warehouses by the river afterwards, and check the opening times before your visit.

Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim is regarded as the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world. Construction began around 1070 as a memorial to King Olav II and was essentially complete by about 1300. It stands over the grave of Saint Olav and combines Romanesque and Gothic elements; the main building material is soapstone. In 1152/53 it became the cathedral of the Catholic archdiocese, and in 1537 it passed to the Lutheran church.

Major restoration work lasted from 1869 to 2001. In 1814 the cathedral served as a polling place in the first elections to the Norwegian Constituent Assembly. It seats around 1,850 people and has two organs, stained-glass windows and a crucifix by Gustav Vigeland. Pilgrims arrive every year along the St Olav Way. As the cathedral is an active church, it is worth checking opening times before your visit. Allow about one to two hours.
