Njupeskär Waterfall

Mörkret, Sweden

Nature

Sweden's highest waterfall, dropping roughly 90 metres in Fulufjället National Park. A well-marked trail of a few kilometres leads from the car park through spruce forest to the viewing point; in winter the fall freezes into an ice column.

Njupeskär in Fulufjället National Park in Dalarna, with a total height of 93 m and a free fall of 70 m, is Sweden's highest waterfall. The water plunges over a sandstone edge and has cut a gorge into the plateau behind it. The national park opened in 2002 and covers 385 square kilometres. The plateau is also home to the spruce "Old Tjikko", whose age is given as about 9,550 years.

The waterfall can be reached on a marked hike of about 2 km each way; the park has about 140 km of trails in total. Allow half a day for the visit and dress for the weather, as snow lies on the plateau for 175 to 200 days a year. The park is home to moose, lynx and brown bears, among other animals. Around midsummer, sunlight reaches the waterfall in the early morning hours.
