Konza Prairie Biological Station
Manhattan, KS
A research preserve of unplowed Flint Hills tallgrass with marked hiking loops and wide views over rolling ridges. Trails are exposed, so go in the morning, wear sturdy shoes and check tick and weather conditions first.
Konza Prairie Biological Station near Manhattan covers 8,616 acres (about 3,490 hectares) in the Flint Hills and is jointly owned by Kansas State University and The Nature Conservancy. Large parts of the tallgrass prairie soil have never been plowed, which is why the site is used for research: prescribed fires at varying intervals and a bison herd imitate natural processes. Along the trails, Permian limestone layers with fossils such as brachiopods come to the surface.
There are three loop trails to choose from: the Nature Trail (about 4.2 km / 2.6 miles, 24 stops), the Kings Creek Loop (about 7.4 km / 4.6 miles) and the Godwin Hill Loop (about 10 km / 6.2 miles). Stay on the trails; dogs, bicycles and drones are not allowed. The trails are open daily from dawn to dusk, though prescribed burns or unsafe conditions can lead to closures. Wildflowers bloom mostly in June and in autumn. The K-177 Overlook by the highway offers an easy view over the Kansas River valley.
