Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site
Topeka, KS
A former segregated elementary school, now a museum on the school desegregation cases that reached the Supreme Court. Plan one to two hours; the exhibits are compact and work well as a stop between Kansas City and the prairie.
The museum is housed in Monroe Elementary School in Topeka, one of the city's four schools for Black children. The present building was erected in 1926 in the Italian Renaissance Revival style of brick and limestone. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that separate educational facilities are "inherently unequal"; the ruling combined five cases, and the Topeka case gave it its name. The site became a National Historic Site in 1992 and has been a National Historical Park since May 13, 2022.
In the school's exhibit rooms you can learn more about the case and the experience of segregation. Allow one to two hours. The address is 1515 SE Monroe Street.
