Homestead National Historical Park

Beatrice, NE

History

A park on one of the first Homestead Act claims, with a visitor center, a restored schoolhouse and walking trails through restored tallgrass prairie. Visit in early summer for wildflowers and allow about two hours.

The park lies about 8 km (5 miles) west of Beatrice and preserves 211 acres (about 85 hectares) around Daniel Freeman's land. Freeman is said to have been one of the first people to file a claim for government land under the Homestead Act of 1862, on January 1, 1863. The Heritage Center shows how the law shaped immigration, farming and the prairie. The Freeman School operated continuously as a one-room school from 1872 to 1967, and the Palmer-Epard log cabin dates from 1867 and was moved to its present site in 1950.

On about 4.3 km (2.7 miles) of trails you walk through roughly 40 hectares (100 acres) of restored tallgrass prairie and the riverside woodland along Cub Creek; an observation platform and an old Osage orange hedgerow are part of the scenery. Allow about two hours for the exhibits and a walk; the prairie is at its best in the summer months.
