Old Market

Omaha, NE

History

A neighborhood of brick warehouses and cobblestone streets, now filled with shops, galleries and cafés, with horse-drawn carriages on busy evenings. Park in a nearby garage and explore on foot, ideally in the late afternoon.

The Old Market is in downtown Omaha, bordered by 10th and 13th Streets and by Farnam and Jackson Streets. It developed in the late 19th century as a wholesale district. In the 1960s many buildings stood vacant; they were converted, and by 1970 it had become an entertainment district. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and designated an Omaha Landmark in 1985.

Brick-paved streets from around 1900, horse-drawn carriages and partly covered sidewalks remain today. Many buildings have brick facades with cast-iron fronts. Today you will find restaurants, galleries and shops. Allow two to three hours on foot; it is usually livelier in the evening. Park nearby and explore on foot.
