Ålesund Art Nouveau Town

Ålesund, Norway

History

A harbour town rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire, with turreted facades around the canal-like waterfront. Climb the steps to Aksla viewpoint for the view over town and islands, and park near the centre before walking.

In the night of 23 January 1904 a great fire destroyed almost the entire town of Ålesund; more than 10,000 people lost their homes. During the rebuilding between 1904 and 1907, around 30 Norwegian architects and about 20 master builders designed the town in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style, with inspiration from all over Europe. The uniform townscape sets Ålesund apart from other Norwegian towns.

Kaiser Wilhelm II, a frequent visitor to the region, sent four ships with materials for emergency shelters after the fire; a street bears his name. The Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre) explains the consequences of the fire and the architectural heritage of Art Nouveau. The town spreads across several islands, including Hessa, Aspøya, Nørve and Uksenøya. Allow two to three hours for a walk through the town centre.
