Aínsa Old Town

Aínsa, Spain

History

A medieval hilltop village centred on a vast arcaded square, with a castle and a Romanesque church. Park outside the walls and walk up; the terrace views reach towards the Pyrenees.

Aínsa is regarded as the legendary capital of the old county of Sobrarbe. The medieval old town is protected as a historic-artistic ensemble. At its centre is the arcaded Plaza Mayor, where the victory of King García Ximénez is celebrated during the Fiesta de la Morisma, held every two years on the first Sunday of September. The church of Santa María is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Upper Aragon, and its cloister combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. In the castle ruins, the keep houses the Ecomuseo de la Fauna Pirenaica.

Allow about two hours for a walk around. In summer an international music festival is held in the castle, when the town is livelier. Walk the lanes in the morning or evening, when it is quieter.
