Route description
Leave Sofia south on the A3 Struma motorway and turn off at Dupnitsa for Sapareva Banya, a spa village with a hot geyser. A mountain road climbs to Panichishte, where a chairlift carries you up to the Seven Rila Lakes; plan a full day and go on a weekday if you can.
Rila Monastery lies in the next valley, reached by returning to the Struma valley and turning off at Kocherinovo for the town of Rila. Its striped arcades and painted church are best seen early or late in the day, and there are campsites and guesthouses along the valley road.
Continue south down the Struma valley on the E79 to Melnik, a tiny wine town of old houses tucked among eroded sand pyramids. Walk the path through the pyramids to Rozhen Monastery, and taste the local Shiroka Melnishka wine.
The last leg turns east at Simitli over the Predela pass to Razlog and Bansko, a ski resort with an old town of stone houses and a gateway to the Pirin National Park. The Vihren hut road above town leads to marked trails. High trails are clear of snow from about July to September.
