Route description
From Corpus Christi, US-77 runs about 230 km south through the King Ranch lands, one of the emptiest stretches of highway in Texas, with few services between Kingsville and Raymondville. Expect a US Border Patrol checkpoint on the way back north near Sarita. Turn east at Rio Hondo for Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, where the Steve Thompson Wildlife Drive (formerly Bayside Drive) gives views over the Laguna Madre.
Port Isabel is the gateway to South Padre Island, with the old lighthouse and a small historic center by the causeway. Cross the 4 km Queen Isabella Causeway to the island for Gulf beaches, dunes and the sea turtle rescue center. The north end of the island has free beach access points, and some allow driving on the sand with care. Spring break in March is very busy.
Palo Alto Battlefield lies on the northern edge of Brownsville, near the junction of FM 1847 and FM 511. From Brownsville, the Gladys Porter Zoo and the historic downtown are near the border crossing to Matamoros. Then drive west on US-83 through the valley towns, a busy, built-up corridor of citrus groves, palms and strip malls, to Alamo.
Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, south of Alamo, protects some of the last native river forest on the Rio Grande. Nearby Estero Llano Grande and Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, both World Birding Center sites, are good for more birding; winter and spring are the best seasons. End in McAllen. This is a popular winter destination for RVers, with many resorts, but summer is hot and humid.
