Route description

Leave Brisbane on the Warrego Highway and climb the range to Toowoomba, about 125 km and 1.5 hours away. The Garden City has fine parks, and Picnic Point lookout on the edge of the Great Dividing Range has views over the Lockyer Valley. Toowoomba’s flower carnival is held each September; book accommodation early if you plan to visit then.

Continue south via Warwick, about 80 km, to Stanthorpe, a further 55 km on the New England Highway. At roughly 800 to 1,000 metres, the Granite Belt is Queensland’s coolest wine and fruit region, with frosty winter mornings and the occasional light snowfall. Ballandean, about 20 km south of Stanthorpe, has cellar doors; arrange a designated driver for tastings.

Girraween National Park is about 30 km south of Stanthorpe, reached by sealed road. Walk to the Pyramid or Granite Arch for views over bare granite domes, and watch for wallabies at dusk. Camping at Bald Rock Creek must be booked ahead through Queensland Parks, and winter nights fall below freezing, so pack warm sleeping gear and check the forecast before you go.

To return to Brisbane, take the New England Highway to Warwick and the Cunningham Highway over Cunningham’s Gap, roughly 260 km and four hours from Girraween. The road winds over the range, with heavy trucks, and fog is possible early in the morning. Fuel up in Warwick or Stanthorpe, as there is no fuel in the national park.
