Woodstock Village Green

Woodstock, VT

History

A classic New England village centered on an oval green, ringed by white Federal and Greek Revival houses and a handful of small shops. Park once and stroll the streets and the covered bridge on foot.

Woodstock lies where U.S. Route 4 meets Vermont Route 106, with an oval village green at its centre. The Woodstock Village Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973, covers 275 acres (about 110 hectares) and has 95 contributing buildings. The buildings date from the late 18th to the late 19th century. They include Billings Farm & Museum and F. H. Gillingham & Sons, which according to the source is the oldest same-family-operated general store in Vermont. In 2011 the American Planning Association named the downtown streetscape a “Great Place in America”.

The village has about 900 residents (2020) and is easy to explore on foot; one to two hours is enough for a walk around the Green. Park once and walk. Check ahead for events and markets taking place in town.
