Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home

Manchester, VT

History

A Georgian Revival mansion built for the family of Robert Todd Lincoln, set on a hillside with views across the Battenkill valley. Tour the house, then walk the grounds and gardens on a clear day.

Hildene was the summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln. The Georgian Revival mansion, completed in 1905, was designed by the firm Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge. It stands on a hill about 90 m (300 ft) above the Battenkill Valley, and the estate covers 412 acres (about 167 ha). Furnishings include family furniture and mementos as well as a 1908 Aeolian organ. The house stayed in the family until 1975, and since 1978 it has been cared for by the nonprofit Friends of Hildene.

On the grounds you will also find the formal garden with more than 1,000 peonies and the restored Pullman private railcar Sunbeam of 1903. At the Rowland Agricultural Center, Nubian goats are kept and cheese is made. Allow several hours for the house and grounds; the views are best on a clear day.
