Wawel Castle

Kraków, Poland

History

A hilltop royal castle and cathedral above the Vistula, the historic seat of Polish kings. Explore the courtyard and cathedral first, then book a state-rooms ticket in advance in summer; the cathedral dress code asks for covered shoulders.

Wawel Hill above the Vistula is regarded as the most important monument of Polish history and culture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 as part of Kraków's Historic Centre. Polish kings resided here. The Gothic cathedral, consecrated in 1364, served as the place of coronations and burials; Casimir III and Sigismund I are among those laid to rest there. The Sigismund Tower holds the Sigismund Bell, which weighs around 13 tonnes and is Poland's most famous bell.

Access to the hill is free during the day; you need tickets for the state rooms, treasury, armoury and cathedral museum, which are best booked online in advance in the season. It is busy all year round and quietest early in the day. Allow two to three hours for the arcaded courtyard and the cathedral. The hill lies on the edge of the Old Town; it is better to park outside the centre and come by tram.
