Pieskowa Skała Castle

Sułoszowa, Poland

History

A Renaissance castle in Ojców National Park, standing beside the limestone pillar known as Hercules' Club. Walk the arcaded courtyard, then follow the valley path through the cliffs; wear sturdy shoes if you plan to hike on from here.

Pieskowa Skała lies in Ojców National Park near Sułoszowa, about 27 km north-north-west of Kraków. The name means "Little Dog's Rock". The castle dates back to the 14th century under Casimir III; in 1542–1544 it was rebuilt as a Renaissance château under Niccolò Castiglione, with arcades and 21 mascarons. The arcaded courtyard was embellished in the 16th century under the Szafraniec family.

Beside the castle rises the rock pinnacle Maczuga Herkulesa (Hercules' Cudgel), roughly 25 to 30 m high depending on the source. Today the castle is a branch of the Royal Castle on Wawel. Allow about two hours for a visit. Opening hours are seasonal and restricted in winter, so check before you travel. If you continue walking in the valley, you need sturdy footwear.
