Virpazar and Lake Skadar
Virpazar, Montenegro
A small harbour village on the shore of Lake Skadar National Park, with reed beds, water lilies and birdlife that can be seen on a short boat trip. Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and wildlife is more active.
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in Southern Europe and lies on the border between Montenegro and Albania. Its surface area fluctuates seasonally between 370 and 530 km², about 65% of it in Montenegro. The Montenegrin part has been a national park since 1983. Around 270 bird species have been recorded, including some of Europe’s last pelicans, as well as dozens of fish species. Most of the water comes from the Morača River.
Virpazar is a small harbour village on the lakeshore and the usual starting point for boat trips through reeds and water lilies. A short boat trip is enough for a first impression. Go in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer. Bring sun protection.
