Budva Old Town

Budva, Montenegro

History

A small walled old town on a former island, with narrow stone lanes, squares and a citadel on the seaward side. Visit in the morning before the beach crowds arrive, and walk the citadel walls for views of the coast.

Budva is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic and is around 2,500 years old. The old town grew up on an island that became a peninsula through silting. The high wall dates from the period of Venetian rule (1420–1797). Two earthquakes shaped the town, in 1667 and 1979; after the 1979 quake the old town was largely rebuilt to its original form in about eight years.

At its heart is the citadel (Santa Maria Fortress) from the 15th century, where the “Grad Teatar” festival takes place in summer. The church of Santa Maria in Punta, dating from 840, is regarded as the oldest precisely dated church in Budva. Allow one to two hours and come in the morning, before the beach crowds begin. From the citadel walls the view stretches along the coast.
