Tihany Abbey

Tihany, Hungary

History

A Baroque abbey church on the Tihany peninsula, which juts into Lake Balaton, with terraces overlooking the water. Come outside July and August if you can, and walk down to the lanes of the village below.

Tihany Abbey, on the peninsula of the same name on Lake Balaton, was founded in 1055 by King Andrew I. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and to the holy bishop Aignan of Orléans. The crypt holds the tomb of Andrew I, the only surviving tomb of a medieval Hungarian king. The foundation charter of 1055 contains the oldest connected Hungarian words on record. The ceiling frescoes in the church are by Károly Lotz.

The abbey was re-established in the 1990s and became an independent monastery of the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation in 2012. The church stands above the village; allow about two hours including a stroll through the village. If possible, avoid July and August, when it is busiest.
