Pannonhalma, Hungary

History

A Benedictine monastery on a hilltop that has been home to monks for over a thousand years, with a basilica, a library and gardens. Join a guided visit where offered and enjoy the views across the Little Plain.

Pannonhalma Archabbey was founded in 996 by Prince Géza and is the first Hungarian Benedictine monastery. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and, after Montecassino, is the second-largest territorial abbey in the world. Highlights are the 13th-century basilica with its crypt, the cloister from the time of King Matthias (1472–1486), the Baroque refectory with trompe-l'œil paintings and the library with around 400,000 volumes.

The grounds include an arboretum with more than 400 species of trees and shrubs and a Baroque Way of the Cross from 1724. About 50 monks live here, and there is also a Benedictine grammar school. Allow three to four hours for the visit. Getting there by car is straightforward. Find out about guided visits in advance.
