Strawbery Banke Museum

Portsmouth, NH

History

A walkable neighborhood of preserved historic houses near Portsmouth's harbor, with costumed interpreters and period gardens. Combine it with a stroll through downtown Portsmouth and its waterfront.

The museum, in the Puddle Dock neighborhood in the South End of Portsmouth, covers nearly 10 acres (about 4 ha). It shows how the neighborhood has changed over the centuries. According to the museum, the Abenaki visited this coast seasonally for more than 12,000 years. In 1623 English settlers founded the settlement of "Strawbery Banke," probably because of the many wild strawberries along the riverbank.

Local citizens founded the organization in 1958 to preserve the neighborhood, and in 1965 it opened to the public as a living history museum. Today it welcomes more than 100,000 visitors a year, and it offers programs year-round. Allow about two to three hours to tour the houses and gardens, and combine it with a walk through downtown Portsmouth and down to the harbor.
