Marginal Way
Ogunquit, ME
A paved clifftop footpath above the rocky Atlantic shore, running between Perkins Cove and Ogunquit's beach area, with benches along the way. Walk it one way in the morning, then return along the same path.
The Marginal Way is a paved coastal footpath about 2 km (1.25 miles) long between Ogunquit and Perkins Cove. Developer Josiah Chase surveyed the land for a summer cottage subdivision in 1891 and in 1925 donated the path and adjoining shoreline to the Ogunquit Village Corporation for public use. The path has been on the National Register of Historic Places since March 2022. Nearly 40 benches invite you to linger at the viewpoints, and steps lead down to small beaches and rocks at the water’s edge.
The one-way walk takes a little under an hour; with stops and the return trip, plan on two hours. Because the path is so popular, early or late hours are best; late May and early June are noticeably quieter than summer. The path is stroller-friendly. Parking is tight; a larger lot is at Hutchins Commons on Route 1, about a 15-minute walk from the north entrance.
