Perast

Perast, Montenegro

History

A baroque seafront village on the Bay of Kotor, lined with stone palaces and churches under a steep hillside. Park at the edge, walk the waterfront, and take a short boat ride to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks.

Perast lies at the foot of Sveti Ilija hill (873 m) on a headland that separates the Bay of Risan from the Bay of Kotor. It was first mentioned in 1336 as a small fishing village with a shipyard, and it prospered under Venetian rule. In the 18th century, 20 Baroque palaces and 17 Catholic and two Orthodox churches were built here. Today only around 240 people live in the town.

Two islets lie offshore. Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela) was built up artificially after seamen found an image of the Virgin Mary on a rock in 1452. Every year at sunset on 22 July, stones are still thrown into the sea (the Fašinada). The church, renovated in 1722, houses a museum with 68 paintings by Tripo Kokolja. You reach the island by boat from Perast. Allow two to three hours for a stroll through the town and the boat trip.
