Peninsula State Park

Fish Creek, WI

Nature

A large Door County park with limestone bluffs, shoreline trails and a wooden tower that rises above the trees for views over Green Bay. Bring a bike or hiking shoes and aim for late afternoon light.

Peninsula State Park in Door County is, according to Wikipedia, Wisconsin's third-largest state park at 3,776 acres (about 1,530 hectares), with roughly 8 miles (13 km) of shoreline on Green Bay. It was created in 1909 and officially made a state park in 1910. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse dates from 1868 and was automated in 1926, and the former keeper's house has housed a museum since 1963. The rebuilt Eagle Tower (reopened in 2021) is 60 feet (18 m) tall; the original 1914 tower (76 ft, 23 m) was closed in 2015. From the top you can see the park, islands and the bay.

There is a sandy beach at Nicolet Bay, an 18-hole golf course and the 5.1-mile (8.2 km) Sunset Bike Trail. With 468 family campsites, the park is also important for campers; only Tennison Bay campground is open year-round. According to Wikipedia, about 1.1 million visitors came in 2024, so it is busy in high season. Plan on at least half a day.
