Morača Monastery

Kolašin, Montenegro

History

A Serbian Orthodox monastery in the Morača river valley, with a church containing medieval frescoes. Dress modestly, ideally with covered shoulders and knees, and stop here on the road between Podgorica and Kolašin.

Morača Monastery in the Morača valley was founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić. The main church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is regarded as an example of the Raška school of architecture; its two main portals are Romanesque. Surviving are 13th-century frescoes with scenes from the life of the prophet Elijah, as well as 16th-century paintings, including a Last Judgement of 1577/78. The Ottomans burned the monastery down in 1505; after about seventy years it was rebuilt between 1574 and 1580.

The monastery belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church. Allow about an hour. Wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. It lies on the road between Podgorica and Kolašin and works well as a stopover; park at the monastery.
