Biogradska Gora National Park

Kolašin, Montenegro

Nature

A national park protecting one of Europe's few remaining old-growth forests, with a glacial lake and easy trails through tall beeches and conifers. Take the loop around the lake, and expect cool air even in summer.

Biogradska Gora National Park was established in 1952 and covers around 55 km² in the Bjelasica mountains near Kolašin, where the park administration is based. At its centre lies a primeval forest of about 16 km² with trees more than 400 years old; beech, sycamore maple and ash grow by the lake, and beech and silver fir on the slopes. The park has several glacial lakes; Lake Biogradsko is the largest and lies in the middle of the primeval forest. UNESCO included the area in its Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1977.

The circuit around the lake is easy and can be done in one to two hours; if you stay longer you can follow paths into the surrounding area. It rains a lot, and the air is cool even in summer. Bring rain and warm clothing, and ideally come in the morning.
