Monschau
Monschau, Germany
A small town in the Eifel with half-timbered houses packed along the Rur river in a narrow valley, overlooked by a castle. The lanes are too narrow for driving, so use the car parks on the edge and walk in.
Monschau lies in the valley of the Rur in the Eifel. The town owes its prosperity to cloth-making: around 1598, Protestant clothmakers from Aachen settled here, finding good conditions in the water of the Rur and the wool of sheep from the High Fens. The last cloth factory closed in 1982. The castle, probably built at the start of the 13th century and now housing a youth hostel, towers above the town.
Among the best-known buildings is the Rotes Haus (Red House), built in the mid-18th century as the home and business premises of the cloth manufacturer Johann Heinrich Scheibler. Today it is a museum giving an insight into the lives of wealthy cloth merchants; the oak spiral staircase with Rococo balustrade is impressive. The historic old town with its half-timbered houses is easy to explore on foot.
