Lindsborg

Lindsborg, KS

History

A small town shaped by Swedish settlers, with painted Dala horses, bakeries and galleries along its main street. Walk the few blocks of Main Street, and plan the visit around the Swedish festivals if you like crowds.

Lindsborg was founded in 1869 by Swedish immigrants from Värmland led by Pastor Olof Olsson, and is nicknamed "Little Sweden." About 30 percent of its roughly 3,800 residents have Swedish ancestry. Downtown you will find shops selling Swedish crafts, including the painted wooden Dala horses, as well as galleries and cafés. The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery says it holds the largest collection of the painter's work in the world, and Bethany College also shapes the town.

One to two hours is enough for a stroll through the few blocks of the center. The Svensk Hyllningsfest, a festival honoring the pioneers, has been held since 1941 in October of odd-numbered years; the next one is on October 15 and 16, 2027, when the town gets very crowded. In March there is Våffeldagen (Waffle Day).
