Läckö Castle

Lidköping, Sweden

History

A white baroque castle on a promontory in Lake Vänern, reached by a causeway from the mainland. Walk the courtyards and the garden, and arrive in the morning in summer when guided tours and the light on the water are best.

Läckö Castle lies on the island of Kållandsö in Lake Vänern, about 25 km north of Lidköping. Bishop Brynolf Algotsson had a fortress built here in 1298, which was later greatly extended. After the Reformation it passed to the Crown in 1527. In the 17th century Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie turned the castle into a magnificent Baroque residence: Jacob De la Gardie had received it in 1615 and added a third floor, and from 1654 Magnus Gabriel added a fourth floor along with decorative painting.

Today the castle is state-owned and looked after by the Swedish National Property Board. You can see courtyards and rooms in the Baroque style. The Läckö Castle Opera is usually held for about three weeks from mid-July. Allow two to three hours for a visit, more in summer.
