Haga
Gothenburg, Sweden
A restored 19th-century working-class district of Gothenburg with wooden houses over stone ground floors, cafés and the long Haga Nygata street. Stop for the oversized cinnamon buns and climb to the Skansen Kronan fort for city views.
Haga is a district of Gothenburg that arose in the mid-17th century at the instigation of Queen Christina as the city's first suburb. In the 1840s industrialisation brought workers here; in the early 20th century about 15,000 people lived in the district, compared with about 4,000 today. The Haga Group, a residents' initiative founded in 1970, resisted plans for demolition; between 1973 and 1977 demolition decreased, and in the 1980s the district was extensively renovated.
Today Haga is known for its wooden houses, cafés and shops. On the Risåsberget hill above the district stands the Skansen Kronan fortress, built between 1687 and 1700 to plans by Erik Dahlbergh to protect the city against Danish attack. It is privately owned and also used for conferences and private parties; check beforehand whether and when it is open to visitors (as of October 2026). Allow two to three hours for the lanes, a café stop and the climb.
