Kullaberg Nature Reserve

Mölle, Sweden

Nature

A rocky peninsula in the far south-west of Sweden, with sea cliffs, heather paths and the Kullen lighthouse at its tip. Wear sturdy shoes for the coastal trails and come on a clear day for views across the Kattegat.

Kullaberg is a peninsula in Scania near Mölle; the nature reserves cover about 980 hectares of land and 300 hectares of water. Steep coastal cliffs, rocky ridges and coves shape the landscape; the highest point is Håkull at about 188 m. At the western tip stands Kullen Lighthouse, designed by Magnus Dahlander in 1898 and considered the brightest in Sweden. The area is an important bird sanctuary. A plant also grows here that occurs in Sweden only on Kullaberg and at one other site.

Numerous walking trails cross the ridge and lead to many bathing coves. A paved road from Mölle takes you to several car parks and trailheads. Allow at least half a day for a circuit; sturdy footwear is advisable on the rocky coastal paths. In clear weather the view stretches across the Kattegat. In the 19th century Mölle was a popular seaside resort, and its small harbour makes a good place for a break.
