Nyhavn

Copenhagen, Denmark

History

A 17th-century canal and harbour in central Copenhagen, lined with colourful townhouses and old wooden ships. Come early in the morning for photos, and walk on to the nearby waterfront.

Nyhavn was built between 1670 and 1675 under King Christian V and dug by Danish soldiers and Swedish prisoners of war. The quay is about 450 m long and runs from Kongens Nytorv to the Inner Harbour, near the Royal Danish Playhouse. The oldest house, No. 9, dates from 1681, and the north side is lined with colourful houses from the 17th and early 18th centuries. Hans Christian Andersen lived here for a total of 18 years, including at Nos. 67 and 18.

Restored historic ships lie in the canal, among them the lightvessel XVII Gedser Rev from 1895 and the two-masted schooner Mira from 1898. A walk takes only a few minutes, and with stops by the water a little under an hour is enough. If you want to take photos in peace, come early in the morning. Kongens Nytorv metro station is at the end of the street.
