Historic Washington State Park
Washington, AR
A preserved 19th-century town on the old Southwest Trail, with restored houses, a tavern and a courthouse that visitors can tour. Start at the visitor center for guided tours, and wear comfortable shoes for the quiet streets.
Washington stood on the Southwest Trail, which connected St. Louis with Fulton on the Red River, and was a stopover for travelers heading to Texas, including James Bowie, Sam Houston and Davy Crockett. The post office has operated since 1820 and is regarded as the oldest continuously operating one west of the Mississippi. From 1863 to 1865 Washington was the Confederate capital of Arkansas after Little Rock fell to Union forces; the building that served as the capitol still stands in the park.
The 101-acre (about 41-hectare) park, with 54 historic buildings, opened to the public in 1973; restoration had begun as early as 1958. You can explore the streets on your own or on guided tours; more than 200,000 19th-century artifacts have been recovered in the area. Allow two to three hours and start at the visitor center in the restored courthouse. Sturdy, comfortable shoes are advisable.
