Beavers Bend State Park
Broken Bow, OK
Pine and hardwood forest along the clear Mountain Fork River, with hiking trails, a lake and a nature center. Visit in autumn for color, and check the river conditions before wading or paddling.
Beavers Bend State Park lies in McCurtain County in southeastern Oklahoma, about 10.5 miles (17 km) north of Broken Bow. It was established in 1937 and covers about 3,500 acres (1,400 ha); it is named after John T. Beavers, an intermarried citizen of the Choctaw Nation. The Mountain Fork River makes an almost 180-degree turn here. The area belongs to the Ouachita Mountains. The park includes Broken Bow Lake, which covers about 14,000 acres (5,700 ha) of water.
For hiking, there is the David L. Boren Hiking Trail, a network of paths through the forest. The river offers trout fishing and canoeing, and the Forest Heritage Center tells you more about the forest and forestry history. In winter you can watch bald eagles, with guided tours offered in season. The park also has campgrounds and cabins. Check current river conditions before swimming or paddling.
