Grand Isle State Park

Grand Isle, LA

Nature

The tip of Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island, with a long fishing pier, a sandy beach and migrating birds in spring and autumn. The drive down Highway 1 is long and flat, so fill the tank beforehand.

Grand Isle State Park covers about 140 acres (57 hectares) at the northeastern end of Grand Isle, Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island, on the Gulf of Mexico. It offers a beach, RV sites and tent sites, and about 2.5 miles (4 km) of trails that are good for birdwatching. The island lies on an important migratory bird route, and the Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival is held in April. The only road connection to the island is Louisiana Highway 1.

Hurricane Ida caused severe damage in 2021; the park stayed closed until June 2023, and the fishing pier remained closed when it reopened (as of June 2023). Check the current condition of the beach access, campground and pier before you travel. The park closes during storms, so plan flexibly during hurricane season.
