The National WWII Museum

New Orleans, LA

History

A large museum with immersive galleries, aircraft and personal stories covering the American experience of the Second World War. Allow at least half a day and reserve tickets for busy periods.

The museum in New Orleans opened on June 6, 2000, as the National D-Day Museum; in 2003 the US Congress designated it America's official national museum of World War II. The idea came from the historian Stephen Ambrose, who was inspired by a conversation with Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had credited Andrew Higgins and his landing craft with helping win the war. The campus has since grown to include several pavilions: the Solomon Victory Theater (2009), the US Freedom Pavilion with its aircraft (2013), Campaigns of Courage (2014-2015) and the Liberation Pavilion (2023).

Visitors receive dog tags that unlock personal stories at various stations. Exhibits include a Spitfire and a Douglas C-47, as well as the 4-D film experience "Beyond All Boundaries." Because of the size of the campus, plan on at least half a day, ideally a full day. At busy times such as school holidays, it is a good idea to reserve tickets early.
