Geysir Andernach

Andernach, Germany

Oddities

Billed as the world's tallest cold-water geyser, it plays on the Rhine peninsula Namedyer Werth, which is reached by boat from Andernach. The trip includes an exhibition, and eruptions follow a set schedule in season, so check the times before you go.

The Andernach Geyser on the Namedyer Werth peninsula in the Rhine is regarded as the world's highest cold-water geyser and was recognised as such by Guinness World Records in 2008. Its fountain reaches 30 to 60 m. It was discovered in 1903 during a drilling that reached a depth of 343 m. The well was later sealed; after an agreement with conservationists in 2005 it has erupted regularly again since 2006.

It is driven by carbon dioxide that accumulates in the water until the pressure forces the water upwards, much like a shaken bottle of mineral water. About every two hours there is an eruption lasting several minutes. A boat takes you into the Namedyer Werth nature reserve; the experience centre opened in 2009. The 2026 season runs from 22 March to 31 October (as of October 2026); allow about three hours.
