Drachenfels
Königswinter, Germany
A hill above the Rhine in the Siebengebirge, crowned by a castle ruin with a sweeping outlook over the river valley. Ride the historic rack railway up or hike the forest trail from Königswinter.
The Drachenfels rises above the Rhine valley near Königswinter in the Siebengebirge. According to legend, this is where Siegfried of the Nibelung saga slew a dragon. The summit carries the remains of a castle, whose tower was built in 1149 by the Archbishop of Cologne and ordered destroyed in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War; from here there are far-reaching views over the Siebengebirge and the Rhine valley. The top station of the Drachenfelsbahn stands at 321 metres.
The Drachenfelsbahn opened on 17 July 1883 and is regarded as the oldest rack railway still in operation in Germany. The valley station lies on the Rhine waterfront in Königswinter, about a 15-minute walk from the railway station. Halfway up, the railway stops at around 170 metres at Schloss Drachenburg, a neo-Gothic castle completed in 1884 that merits a visit of its own.
