Delta Blues Museum

Clarksdale, MS

History

A small museum in the old freight depot at Clarksdale, with guitars, photographs and a cabin once lived in by Muddy Waters. Time your stop with live music in the evening, as the town's juke joints are part of the experience.

The Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale is dedicated to collecting, preserving and presenting the blues. It is housed in a historic depot of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad, which, according to the museum, was built in 1918 as a freight depot. The museum moved into the building in 1999.

The main exhibit is the restored cabin where Muddy Waters is said to have lived in his youth on the Stovall Plantation; it was moved into the museum. The museum also shows blues-themed artwork, for example by the sculptor Floyd Shaman and the photographer Birney Imes. The band ZZ Top, especially Billy Gibbons, helped raise money for the museum, and Eric Clapton and Paul Simon have visited. The museum also supports children and young people who want to learn an instrument. Allow one to two hours for a visit and combine it with a walk around Clarksdale.
