Chania Old Town and Venetian Harbour

Chania, Greece

History

A Venetian harbour with an old lighthouse, lined by cafés and narrow lanes of Venetian and Ottoman houses. Park outside the old town, walk the quay at sunset and wander the backstreets away from the front.

Chania's old town goes back to a Venetian foundation: Crete passed to Venice after 1204, Canea was settled in 1252, and the fortifications began to be built in 1538. The harbour shows the legacy of the Venetians as well as that of the Ottomans, who took the city in the Cretan War (1645–1669). They turned churches into mosques and built the Küçük Hasan Pasha Mosque (Yali Mosque) on the harbour. The Firkas fortress is part of the partly preserved defences.

The lighthouse at the end of the mole is 21 m high. Its trapezoidal base is Venetian, while its present appearance dates from the Egyptian restoration of 1839; it was last renovated in 2005. It cannot be entered. Besides the harbour, the districts of Kasteli, Splantzia and Topanas are worth exploring. Allow half a day. The harbour is especially atmospheric in the evening; park outside the old town and continue on foot.
